The most important duty of a Mansfield Police Officer is to protect life and property. This responsibility is achieved by the enforcement of statutes and ordinances and by providing a variety of services to the people in the community.

Police Officer

Examples of Work:

--Conduct patrol activity in assigned beats for the purpose of preventing or controlling criminal activity.
--Enforce statutes and ordinances.
--Respond to requests for police services in a professional and courteous manner.
--Conduct a variety of investigative responsibilities pursuant to criminal incidents and eventually testifying in a court setting.
--Initiate and complete covert investigative activities regarding drug enforcement, prostitution, and other illegal activities in the community.
--Deliver services in assigned neighborhood patrol districts that are designed to prevent and control serious or frequent neighborhood problems.
--Work with neighborhood associations, schools, and other "service providers" in the community with the intent of assisting residents to live and work more safely.
--Police Officers perform their duties pursuant to the Departments General Orders and CALEA guidelines, with a variety of training programs that are presented periodically to all employees.


Be a U.S. Citizen between the ages of 21 and 40 on the date of the exam
Possess a high school diploma, GED or equivalent
Possess a valid driver's license
Pass a series of assessments including:

    *Written Civil Service exam

    *Oral Interview

    *Physical agility test

    *Medical and Psychological exam

    *Polygraph exam/CVSA

    *Drug test

    *Background Check

    Public Safety Communication Division: Telecommunicator

    Examples of Work:

    Monitors and responds to all radio traffic and telephone calls exercising independent and prioritized Judgement to ensure employee and citizen safety;
    Maintains availability status of emergency equipment and personnel;
    Monitors and transmits radio frequencies of common public safety interest;
    Transmits information to emergency vehicles (weather, hazardous street conditions, traffic problems, etc.);
    Enters and maintains computer data;
    Maintains logs, reports and schedules;
    Miscellaneous clerical duties;
    Performs related duties.

    Desired Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

    Knowledge of (1) local and surrounding area geographics, (2) federal and state communication rules and regulations, (3) departmental methods and procedures, (4) communication equipment; Skill in (5) data entry, (6) typing; Ability to (7) function professionally and capably in a stressful environment, (8) remain calm in emergency situations.

    Acceptable Experience and Training:

    Any combination of training and work experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
